A Beginner’s Guide to Barefoot Running

1. Take it slow: “When you take your shoes off, you’re learning a new physical skill,” McDougall said. Davis recommends starting off with a walk-jog program, and beginning with a quarter mile, then slowly increasing distance and intensity.

2. Do not go barefoot if you have sensory loss in your feet, and be careful to protect your feet from extreme elements: Davis recommends using a thin soled shoe such as the Vibram Five Fingers -- a shoe with a thin rubber sole that fits like a glove -- in the winter or on really hot summer days to protect your feet.

3. Pay attention: “Let your body tell your brain what it wants to do,” McDougall suggests. “If something feels odd, pay attention and make an adjustment.”

4. Take really short, quick strides

5. Quit looking down: “If you do that, you’re putting your feet in front of your center of mass and momentum, and it creates a braking motion,” McDougall says.
