Food Poisoning, Sickness and Diarrhoea
That'll teach me! Just had a wee bout of food poisoning and it totally cleaned me out both ends. I know it was food poisoning and not a 'viral thingy' because David got it too just a couple of hours after I started and we were both feeling heaps better once it was over, just drained! Just as well I was about done with my bout when David got started because we've only got one toilet!
So what caused it? Not sure but it may have been some mince David thawed out overnight on Tuesday. It was gifted to us by a friend (at least I think he's a friend - maybe I'll review that...) David forgot it was there and left it in the sink all day Wednesday, finally putting it in the refrigerator on Wednesday evening. On Thursday we were not feeling very hungry or lively in the evening so it may have been that the symptoms were showing even then and I'm blaming the mince unfairly. Anyhow, I made up a quick evening meal of stir fried courgettes with garlic and onion, then mixed it with about half the aforementioned mince and some frozen tomatoes. Stirred it all up till it was just simmereing then served it with a light sprinkling of grated cheese. It was tasty but had a gamey flavour to it. Does that mean something?
I was feeling fine on Friday morning and finished it off for breakfast with a couple of fried eggs. Then at 4.45pm after I'd seen my last client and fetched the washing in I came over all tired and went to lie down. I slept for a while - it took about an hour to brew - and the rest is history.
Now the serious stuff...
When vomiting and/or diarrhoea strike it is essential to keep putting mineralised fluids into the body to prevent dehydration and demineralisation. By the time I had finished erupting (for want of a better word) I was severely dehydrated. And when I put even just water into my stomach it came out again very rapidly.
David went out and bought me some Frank's Lime, Lemon and Bitters because I have found that for me it works well for rehydration. Lucozade doesn't do it for me. I made up my concoction below and I took frequent (every 3-5 minutes or so) small sips and my stomach accepted it.
By next morning I was feeling drained but well. I finished the last of 8 bottles of my mixture (having frequesntly brushed my teeth during the application to prevent the sugar and acid doing damage) as breakfast and enjoyed a very light breakfast of half a grated apple and 2 tablespoons of natural acidophilus yogurt.
Astarte's Rehydration Formula:
150ml bottle Frank's Lime, Lemon and Bitters 150ml mineral water 6 drops Elete Rehydrating Mineral Drops or 1/4 teaspoon Kruschen Salts (both available from Health Stores)
Mix the Frank's with mineral water in a bottle with a lid. Add Elete or Kruschen Salts to the bottle.
