Tips for reducing your grocery bill

- Watch out for discount vouchers or coupons in the supermarket fliers in your letterbox.
- Get into the habit of making a single trip to the supermarket once a week rather than several smaller trips as this will reduce your time in the store and the chances you will buy items you do not really need.
- Shop at local wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, or join a local community garden where all the produce is shared.
- Buy bulk meat packs from a wholesale butcher and divvy them up.
- Before grabbing the largest box of a product, calculate the per unit or per weight cost. More often than you would expect, smaller packages of an item are actually a better deal than buying the same item in a larger package.
- Buy house brands.
- Buy from bulk bins so you do not pay for fancy packaging
- Go shopping when you're full, so you aren't tempted to buy snacks or unecessary items.

Good call, Rachael. Another suggestion to help reduce overpackaging is to strip off all the excess packaging before you pack your products in your cloth or recycled bags at the checkout. Leave the discarded wrappers at the checkout. If we all do this the supermarkets will soon get the message.
