The R4DS Version 2 was the first flashcard for the NDS (not just the first R4 card)! It was first produced towards the end of 2007. The original Nintendo R4 card had to be redesigned after about half a year because of a problem with the spring mechanism that affected about 5% of the flash cards. The new design, known as the "R4 Version 2", featured a push-in Micro SD memory card design. The R4 version 2 was always and still is the fastest loading Nintendo DS or Nintendo DSi flash card ever to be made, booting up in less than half a second.
The R4 version 2 could only take MicroSD memory cards up to 2GB, however. This became a problem as games got larger, and fewer people bought it. The last official software update for the R4 version 2 was released on April 24th, 2008. Since then, the R4 version 2 became incompatible with many newer games as newer code was required to update the flash card. Several unofficial software updates have been released by homebrew developers since then to address some of these incompatibility problems.
